Users across the world, including India experienced difficulty in accessing Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram on Friday. According to reports, these most popular social media apps in the world have been crashed and users are complaining of error in media downloads.
Instagram too has stopped working amid a huge Facebook outage.
Both parent company Facebook as well as sibling company WhatsApp are both having strange issues at the same time, users report.
On Instagram – just like those other apps – the issues appear to be limited only to a specific part of the site. Users report that their feed might load, but that it is not possible to post anything new into it.
Doing so brings up an error message indicating that “Photo Can’t Be Posted”, according to users experiencing the problems.
Issues were particularly focused on the east coast of the US, according to the tracking website Down Detector. But they were reported across the world, with significant numbers of reports also coming from Europe, South America and East Asia.
Last time all three of Facebook’s major services broke, the outage lasted for many hours. It later blamed that problem on a server issue that had a knock-on effect on Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as Facebook, since the three use shared infrastructure.
“As a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services,” Facebook posted on Twitter after that previous outage was fixed. “We’ve now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s patience.”
When those problems happened in March, they were said to be perhaps the biggest outage in the history of the internet, hitting millions of people.
“By duration, this is by far the largest outage we have seen since the launch of Downdetector in 2012,” Tom Sanders, co-founder of Downdetector, told Techcrunch in the wake of that outage. “Our systems processed about 7.5 million problem reports from end users over the course of this incident. Never before have we such a large scale outage.”
According to DownDetector, the error was noticed at around 14:49 BST as users began reporting that they were having problems.
Several users took to Twitter and complained that they were unable to see images or refresh their Facebook and Instagram feed while many users said image download failed on their WhatsApp.
Users complained that picture downloads have stopped working on WhatsApp, with some users unable to send messages. While text appears to work but photos, videos and voice messages are not working, according to various reports.
Instead, users just see a message reading “download failed” and the content will not arrive on WhatsApp. “Couldn’t download image,” or ‘Can’t download. Please ask that it be resent to you” like error users facing.
However, there has been no official reason given for the outage over the server down of the most popular messenger and photo sharing platforms.
Instagram user @Paerbaer asks, “Is Instagram story not working or is my internet just trash right now?” Instagram user Robin Grima writes, “Can’t upload to story, can’t send pictures in chats and can’t open photos sent. Most people’s icons are blank. Can’t see posts, they’re blank.”
Instagrammer Hiroshi28 asks, “Are we surprised that Instagram keeps crashing and being buggy?”
US east coast a+ Europe are hotspots for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp being down right now https://twitter.com/MattNavarra/status/1146421519301644290 …
‘Been trying to post for the last hour but it won’t post anything, keeps saying can’t be posted,’ wrote Instagram user Anna Kambouris.
‘Ah, heck. Here we go again,’ another user said.
